PM Oli secures two-thirds of votes in trust motion

Present: 263, 188 vote for Oli, 74 against, 1 neutral, 12 abstain from voting

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has secured the vote of confidence in the meeting of the House of Representatives (HoR) on Sunday.

Oli secured 188 votes of confidence in the HoR meeting in accordance with Article 76 (4) of the Constitution of Nepal.  

Of the total of 263 lawmakers, who were present in the HoR meeting, 188 cast their votes in favor of the vote of confidence, 74 cast against the vote of confidence, while one lawmaker remain neutral, Speaker Devraj Ghirmire said.

“The motion for the vote of confidence floated by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli in the HoR meeting in line with Article 76 (4) of the Constitution has been endorsed as the 188 votes secured by the Prime Minister is the majority of the incumbent lawmakers of the HoR,” announced Ghimire.

Twelve lawmakers abstained from voting.  They are Ambika Basnet, Gita Basnet, Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, Deepak Bohara, Speaker Devraj Ghimire, Devendra Paudel, Durlav Thapa, Basanta Nembang, Manorama Sherchan, Bikram Pandey, Bonod Chaudhary and Sobita Gautam.

The next meeting will take place at 1 pm on Monday.

CPN (UML) Parliamentary Party leader Oli was appointed as the Prime Minister of Nepal on July 14 with the support of Nepali Congress.

Prachanda-led government collapsed after he could not secure the vote of confidence in the parliament meeting on July 12. Only 63 lawmakers including those from CPN (Maoist Center, CPN (Unified Socialist) and Rastriya Swatantra Party voted for Prachanda while 194 lawmakers cast their votes against the vote of confidence.
