Downpour wreaks havoc on settlements in Bhaktapur (with photos)

The torrential rains that powered down on Tuesday night have taken a massive toll on settlements in Bhaktapur district.

The Hanumante River swollen by downpour has forced Shanti Nikenta School in Bhaktapur to close down as the floods waterlogged the ground floor of the school. 

Similarly, the floods broke down compound walls of some houses and inundated ground floors of many houses in areas including Gundu, Gairidhara in Suryabinayak Municipality and Barahi and Hanumanghat in Bhaktapur Municipality this morning. 

Member of Parliament and Nepali Congress Bhaktapur District President Durlav Thapa has called one and all to stand united for the relief and rescue works for the flood-hit victims.

“The floods in the Hanumante River and Manohara River and their tributaries – Ghattekhola and Khasyangkhusung rivulets – have caused massive damages to the roads and houses located along the coastal areas,” reads a press note issued by MP Durlav Thana, “I would like to call on three-tire governments to carry out rescue works and provide relief for the flood-hit victims."

Expressing readiness to collaborate with the local governments, Thapa has urged all three-tier governments to come up with a long-term solution to deal with these recurring problems induced by natural disasters.

The floods triggered by downpour also incurred damages to paddy fields in some areas including Balkot in the district and hit transportation services, said Journalist Krishna Kisi.

One killed, 36 rescued in Kathmandu
Similarly, a person died after being swept away by the Balkhu River and as many as 36 people affected by floods and landslides have been rescued from different areas in the Kathmandu Valley.

The Spokesperson of Nepal Police, Dan Bahadur Karki, said that 12 persons from Kathmandu district and 24 from Lalitpur district were rescued from the flood-induced disasters in the city. Karki shared that 11 persons from Balkhu and Kuleshwor area and an individual from New Buspark area were rescued.

The deceased has been identified as 45-year-old Ramswarup Mahato of Banke. The police retrieved the body stuck under the Balkhu Bridge. The riverbank areas in the city including Balkhu, Bafal, Dhobikhola corridor, Sundarighat area and others were waterlogged due to inundation.
