Six people died when the Mexican army opened fire on immigrants trying to enter the United States illegally.

Six immigrants were killed and 10 others sustained injuries when soldiers opened fire on Tuesday in the border region of northern Guatemala, the BBC reported.

The deceased are said to be citizens from Nepal, Egypt, Cuba, India and Pakistan. However, the identity of the deceased has not yet been disclosed.

When the vehicle refused to stop at the checkpoint, the army opened fire.

According to international media outlets, 17 other people in the vehicles were also arrested and handed over to the immigration department.
