The government is making preparations to give continuity to Dhiraj Pratap Singh as the Inspector General of Police (IGP) through an ordinance.
The government is introducing an ordinance to give continuity to IGP Singh after the latter is set to retire on ground of the 30 years of service limit in the second week of April, 2023.
“An agreement on scrapping the provision of mandatory retirement after completing 30 years of service limit has been reached,” said an official at the Ministry of Home Affairs, adding, “A file in this regard has reached the Finance Ministry.”
Singh had been appointed to the post of IGP on May 1, 2022. He entered the police service on March 25, 1993. He will serve for four years more if the 30 years of service limit is scrapped. He will retire after he completes a term of four years or when he reaches 58 years.
The government is making preparations to lift the 30 years of service limit by amending the Rule 41 of the Police Regulations-2014, through an ordinance.
High-ranking police officers, who are in the fray for becoming the IGP, however, are lobbying with the top leaders in favor of the 30-year limit.
The file will be sent to the Law Ministry once it is endorsed by the Finance Ministry. Once it is approved by the Law Ministry, the file will be endorsed by the Council of Ministers in consultation with the Public Service Commission.
The ordinance will come into force once it is authenticated by the President.
