The Nepal-India Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NICCI) has urged the proposed Nepali Ambassador to India, Dr. Shankar Sharma, to address the challenges that persist in bilateral trade between the two nations.
Handing over a memorandum to the proposed Nepali Ambassador to India, Dr. Sharma on Friday, NICCI President Sunil KC highlighted the numerous challenges subsisting in bilateral trade and commerce between Nepal and India.
"Given India's considerable economic size and Nepal's geographical proximity, the two nations engage in extensive bilateral trade," said President KC, "While engaging in bilateral trade, various problems have emerged. I would like to request Ambassador Sharma to take the initiative in addressing these issues."
Similarly, proposals related to bilateral trade and transit were also raised during the interaction with Ambassador Sharma, according to the press note issued by the NICCI.
These proposals included the smooth operation of a railway service between Biratnagar and Jogbani, the construction of additional dry ports and Integrated Check Posts (ICPs), the facilitation of market access for Nepali goods in India, the establishment of quarantine facilities for Nepali agricultural products, and the implementation of a Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA).
During the interaction, NICCI members voiced their discontent over the Indian side's imposition of BIS certification on Nepali imports.
Meanwhile, outgoing NICCI President Shreejana Rana urged Ambassador Sharma to accord priority to the promotion of Indian tourism in Nepal, recalling the significant role that the NICC had played in its endeavor in the past.
