Rajiv Gurung, alias Deepak Manange, a member of parliament from Gandaki Province, is set to receive a 20 percent reduction in his sentence.

The bench of District Court Kathmandu Judge Kamal Prasad Pokharel on Friday ordered a 20 percent reduction in his sentence as requested by him.

Manange will have his sentence reduced by one year if he gets the 20 percent reduction.

Manang had filed an application on February 24, seeking a 20 percent reduction in his sentence as per Section 41 (a) of the National Criminal Procedure (Code), Act 2017.

Section 41 (a) of the Criminal Procedure Code provides for a 20 percent reduction in the sentence and fine if he surrenders to the court within 60 days of the final verdict.

He had sought a reduction in his sentence as per the same provision. Manange was sentenced to five years in prison for chopping off Milan Gurung (Chakre Milan)'s hand with a sword.

The Supreme Court had also slapped Manange with a 5-year jail term 20 years ago. He was arrested soon after the incident and has already served 2 years and 8 months in prison.

Although he has, now, to serve 2 years and 4 months in prison, he has been granted a one-year remission. He will have to serve only the remaining 16 months of his sentence.

Manange was sent to Dillibazaar Jail on November 12, 2024 after the Supreme Court upheld the decision of the Patan High Court on November 5.
