A meeting of the non-establishment faction of the Nepali Congress (NC) has decided to field General Secretary Gagan Thapa against Party President Sher Bahadur Deuba for the election of the Parliamentary Party (PP) leader.
The meeting of the faction held at Hotel Ambassador this morning agreed to field Thapa as a candidate for the PP leader after another contender Dr Shekhar Koirala backed off from the race.
According to the agreement, Gagan will not claim for the post provided the election of the PP leader is held again in the next five years, sources have said.
Leader Arjun Narasingha KC of this faction, following the meeting, said, “We are inching towards consensus. We will forge agreement on a common candidacy for the PP leader. We will strike a deal on it within an hour.”
KC further said both the leaders are flexible. “We will field a common candidate against Deuba in the election for the PP leader.”
The election to NC PP leader is taking place at 8 am tomorrow (Wednesday).
