A London-bound Air India flight carrying 242 passengers and crew crashed into a medical college building shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad airport on Thursday, killing at least 204 people, officials said.
The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has launched a probe into the crash, which occurred in a residential area near the airport. Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was believed to be on board the ill-fated flight, according to senior BJP leader Bhupendrasinh Chudasama.
“Vijay Rupani was traveling to London on this flight. I am heading to the civil hospital to gather more information,” Chudasama told reporters.
Eyewitnesses reported a massive explosion as the aircraft crashed, sparking plumes of smokes and fires in the surrounding area. Rescue operations are ongoing, with authorities working to retrieve more bodies and identify victims.
Ahmedabad airport officials confirmed that normal flight operations have resumed following the tragedy.
This marks one of the deadliest aviation disasters in recent years, compared to other major crashes worldwide, including the August 2024 Sao Paulo plane crash that killed 61 people. (with inputs from PTI)
