Ruling Nepali Congress (NC) has made it clear that former President Bidya Devi Bhandari should not return to active politics.
The former office-bearers and President Deuba concluded that it was inappropriate for the former President to re-enter active politics at the residence of President Sher Bahadur Deuba in Budhanilkantha on Tuesday morning.
Seven office-bearers had discussed this matter at residence of Prakash Man Singh in Chaksibari yesterday. Five among those seven leaders went to Budhanilkantha and held discussions with Deuba today.
Participating leader Gopalman Shrestha said, "After having served as President, it is not appropriate to return to party politics. The position of President is the highest in the country. It does not suit someone who has held this position to return to politics. This was the sentiment shared among the leaders. The President also echoed the same.
In the discussion involving Gopalman Shrestha, Prakash Man Singh, Krishna Prasad Sitaula, Bijaya Gachchhadar, and Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat, President Deuba stated that CPN (UML) should take a decision on this matter.
"UML Chair should come clear whether the former President can return to politics or not," Shrestha quoted Deuba as saying, "The UML must make an appropriate and serious decision on this issue."
The leaders expressed the view that since the former President holds the honored and highest position of the state, the dignity of the office should be maintained, Shrestha added.
Meanwhile, Bhandari has already announced her comeback to active politics. The issue of her membership renewal has also caused polarization among UML leaders.
