Province 1 Chief Parshuram Khapung has called on political parties to stake claim for the formation of a new government in the province.
“A Province Assembly member of the political parties represented in Province 1 Assembly has been called to stake claim for the post of Chief Minister in accordance with Article 168 (2) by 5 pm Sunday (January 8),” Khapung said in a statement.
CPN (UML) standing committee member Hikmat Karki and CPN (Maoist Center) leader Indra Bahadur Angbo are vying for the post of the Chief Minister.
Both the leaders are already appointed as the parliamentary party (PP) leader of their respective parties.
The newly formed ruling alliance commands two thirds majority in the province.
There are 93 lawmakers in Province 1. Of them 47 lawmakers are required to form the government.
Currently, the seven-party alliance has 60 lawmakers including 40 from the UML, 13 from the Maoist Center, 6 from the RPP and 1 from the Janata Samajwadi Party.
