The National Examination Board (NEB) has decided that only students who have completed 14 years of age will be allowed to participate in the Secondary Education Examination (SEE). The Board has instructed schools across the country to ensure that only students meeting the age requirement are included in the examination.
According to NEB Member Secretary Janga Bahadur Aryal, students who have not yet reached the required age may revise their date of birth, as provisions for such corrections exist. He stated that schools may facilitate the process by providing certified records from the time of admission in Grade 1 to the local registrar’s office for necessary amendments in the birth certificate.
The Board’s notice further mentions that details corrected in the birth certificate—such as name, surname, and date of birth—can be updated in the Education Management Information System (EMIS) system. Corrections for students from Grades 1 to 7 can be made by respective schools, while those for Grade 8 must be completed by the concerned local government. This provision was approved in coordination with the Center for Education and Human Resource Development.
The Board noted that the government has authorized the Department of National ID and Registration to permit corrections of details—including age, names, and surnames—for all individuals, including students. This authorization was granted on July 30, 2025.
The NEB is currently processing examination application forms for students participating in the 2026 SEE, and registration forms for Grade 9 students who will appear in the 2027 SEE.
The Education Regulations allow students aged five and above to enroll in Grade 1, and require SEE candidates to have completed 14 years of age by mid-April of the examination year. Although the Ministry of Education in 2078 BS removed the age bar for school-level final examinations except for Grade 12, the NEB reinstated the 14-year age requirement beginning in 2080, resulting in recurring complications.
