Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal, who is currently on a four-day official visit to China, visited the historic White Dagoba Temple in Beijing on Tuesday. Built by the legendary 13th-century Nepali architect and artisan Araniko, the iconic structure stands as one of Beijing's most significant archaeological landmarks and a powerful symbol of centuries-old Nepal-China ties.
Known colloquially as the White Dagoba Temple, the sacred site holds immense religious importance for Buddhist devotees. The heritage structure underwent an extensive renovation project before being reopened to the public in 1998. The renovation meticulously preserved traditional Newari architectural styles and engineering techniques, highlighting intricate wooden doors, beautifully carved windows, and a magnificent golden pinnacle (gajur).
In modern diplomacy, Araniko’s 700-year-old masterpiece is frequently cited as a foundational pillar of the deep-rooted cultural and diplomatic relations between Nepal and China.
The Foreign Minister was accompanied during his visit by Rebecca Rajbhandari, co-founder of the Araniko Project, who also assisted as an interpreter for the delegation.
Reflecting on the high-level visit, Rajbhandari shared her excitement on social media. “The Foreign Minister visited the White Dagoba Temple earlier today. I am delighted to have had the opportunity to serve as an interpreter during his visit,” she wrote on her X account.
