Paraguay have advanced to the Round of 16 in the ongoing World Cup after a thrilling penalty shootout victory over Germany at Boston Stadium on Tuesday morning. The South American side triumphed 4–3 on penalties, marking a historic milestone as the first time Paraguay ever defeated a European team in the knockout stage of the tournament. Meanwhile, the journey for four-time world champions Germany came to a disappointing end in the Round of 32.
The high-stakes match went to a shootout after remaining locked at 1–1 through 90 minutes of regulation and 30 minutes of extra time. This dramatic encounter stands as the first match of the current World Cup to be decided by a penalty shootout.
The shootout itself was a masterclass in tension. During the initial five penalty kicks, both goalkeepers put on a spectacular display, saving two penalties each to leave the score tied at 3–3. For Paraguay, Mauricio, Gustavo Gómez, and Matias Galarza successfully converted their chances, while Captain Joshua Kimmich, Jamal Musiala, and Nadiem Amiri found the back of the net for Germany.
The deadlock was finally broken in sudden death. Germany’s Jonathan Tah stepped up for the sixth penalty but fired his shot over the crossbar. Seizing the golden opportunity, Paraguay's Jose Canale calmly slotted home the decisive penalty to seal the historic victory and send his team through to the next round.
