In response to Joshimath land subsidence, which caused houses and other structures to develop cracks, the Uttarkhand government on Wednesday offered Rs 1.5 lakh in compensation to affected families who have relocated to safer regions.

"Each household will receive Rs. 1.50 lakh in urgent interim help. There are no other structures being demolished outside the two hotels that are designated as "unsafe." Cracks have been found in 723 structures so far, The Indian Express quoted R Meenakshi Sundaram, secretary to Uttarakhand's CM, as saying.

Residents of homes and other buildings that have been designated for demolition have been urged to leave by district officials because they have developed cracks and are considered to be "unsafe".

As many as 131 households have reportedly been relocated to safer areas, according to the local administration.

According to Chamoli's district magistrate, Himanshu Khurana, the central team will assess the damage to houses caused by the ground subsidence and make recommendations for the future while working closely with the local government on relief and rescue operations. (With inputs from Agencies)
