Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Thapa has said that he wants to see the newly elected President Ram Chandra Poudel as a civilian Head of State.
He congratulated Poudel on Friday and said that he wished him to be seen as a civilian Head of State rather than a king-like President.
“President is not a continuation of the King or Royal Institution of Nepal," Thapa said, adding, "We want to see Ram Chandra Poudel as a civilian Head of State, not a king-like President, who will stand firm for the protection of the Constitution."
He said that the respect, dignity and reputation of the President are not based on traditional values, decorations and security armor, but on constitutional role, transparent performance, simple lifestyle and civil manners.
He also mentioned that the newly elected President Poudel should distance himself from the political ideology upheld by the Congress.
“Until you were a presidential candidate, you were a member of the Congress. As a leader, you were attached to a political ideology and worked hard for it,” General Secretary Thapa said, “but now you should distance yourself from it.”
