PM Dahal secures vote of confidence for 2nd time

172 for motion, 89 against motion

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has received a vote of confidence from the House of Representatives.

Prachanda received the vote of confidence from 10 parties including the Nepali Congress from the meeting of the House of Representatives held on Monday.

Prachanda secured 172 votes in favor of the vote of confidence. Out of 262 lawmakers who took part in the elections, 89 votes were cast against the motion. One lawmaker remained neutral.

This is the second time Dahal obtained the vote of confidence from the Parliament after becoming the Prime Minister  of Nepal.

The Prime Minister had to take a vote of confidence after CPN (UML) and Rastriya Prajatantra Party pulled out of the government over the differences on the presidential and vice presidential elections.

There is a constitutional provision that the Prime Minister must take a vote of confidence within 30 days after the party participating in the government withdraws its support. According to this provision, the Prime Minister was supposed to take the vote of confidence by March 26.

Chairman of CPN (Maoist Center) Dahal was appointed as the Prime Minister on December 25. For the first time, Prime Minister Dahal received more than 99 percent vote of confidence from the House on January 10.

He has the support of Nepali Congress, Rastriya Swatantra Party, Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP), Unified Socialist Party, Janamat Party, Loktantrik Samajbadi Party (LSP), Nagarik Unmukti Party, Rastriya Janamorcha, along with the Maoist Center.

The Prime Minister needed 138 MPs for a vote of confidence. In the House of Representatives, there are 32 MPs from the Maoist Center, 88 from the Congress, 19 from the RSP, 11 from the JSP, 10 from the Unified Socialist Party, six from the Janamat Party, four from the LSP, four from the Nagarik Unmukti Party and one from the Rastriya Janamorcha. He got more than 60 percent of MPs’ votes.

Similarly, in the House of Representatives, there are 79 MPs from UML, 14 from RPP, two independent MP, one from Nepal Workers and Peasants Party (NWPP) and one from Aam Janata Party.
