Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has asked Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ to appoint Additional Inspector General Basanta Bahadur Kunwar to the post of Inspector General of Nepal Police.
In a telephonic conversation on Friday, President Deuba asked Prime Minister Prachanda to make Kunwar as the head of Nepal Police, a source at the Prime Minister’s secretariat told Nepalkhabar.
A cabinet meeting of the Council of Ministers is taking place at 4 pm today.
The meeting is expected to take a decision on the appointment of a new IGP.
The Deuba government had appointed Kunwar to the post of DIG nine months ago. He was promoted as AIG a few days ago.
Meanwhile, AIG Shyam Lal Gyawali, who is considered to CPN (UML) is also in the race to the post of AIG. Maoist Center leaders are also backing Gyawali.
A cabinet meeting today is appointing a new IGP with effect from Saturday. To be elected IGP will take charge for the next two years.
Other AIGs vying for the post of IGP include Tek Prasad Rai, Deepak Thapa and Kiran Bajracharya.
