At least 150 people were crushed to death in the capital city Seoul of South Korea when people were celebrating Halloween festivities on Saturday evening.
South Korea plunged into the state of mourning after 151 people were trampled to death in a narrow alley during Halloween celebrations in Itaewon, The Guardian reported. Over 82 sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital for cardiac arrest.
With the lifting of social distancing as the COVID-19 subsided, over 100,000 people, many clad in costume, were participating in the festivities in Itaewon last night.
Revelers reported chaotic scenes apparently triggered by the sheer volume of the people on the streets before the deadly stampede occurred shortly after 10 pm, the Korea media reports said.
Meanwhile, President Yoon Suk-yeol in a televised address declared a state of national mourning on the tragedy. (With inputs from Agencies)
