Sixteen people who were arrested in the case of sending Nepali citizens to America as fake Bhutanese refugees were remanded to three more days in custody (until May 24).
District Police Range Kathmandu took another permission from the District Court Kathmandu on Sunday to detain them for three more days.
The district attorney's office asked the court for permission to detain them for five more days. But the court allowed them to be detained for three days.
Now, they will remain in police custody until May 24.
The police, who are investigating fraud and organized crime, are submitting the case file to the district attorney's office on Sunday. Police get 60 days to investigate organized crime. The police arrested the accused and started investigation from March 26.
So far 16 people have been arrested in this case. Police said that more than a dozen others are still absconding.
Former Deputy Prime Minister Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, former Home Minister Bal Krishna Khand, former Home Secretary Tek Narayan Pandey, former Parliamentarian Angtawa Sherpa, former Home Minister's security advisor Indrajit Rai, former Home Minister Khand's private secretary Narendra KC, Hajj Committee Chairman Shamsher Miya and refugee leader Teknath Rijal have been arrested for cheating in the name of refugees.
Similarly, Sanu Bhandari, Keshav Dulal, Sandesh Sharma, Sagar Rai, Tanka Gurung, Top Bahadur's son Sandeep Rayamajhi, Gobinda Chaudhary and Ram Sharan KC are doing time in police custody.
The district court will decide whether to keep them in jail or release.
