The ruling coalition has reached an agreement to give the Chief Minister to the Nepali Congress in Koshi Province.

Rajendra Prasad Pandey, acting chairman of the CPN (Unified Socialist) informed that a meeting of the ruling alliance held at the Prime Minister's residence, Baluwatar this afternoon, took a decision to this effect.

"A meeting of the ruling alliance decided to advise the province to make Uddhav Thapa, the leader of the Nepali Congress parliamentary party, the Chief Minister," he told the media after the meeting.

After the downfall of the UML government within six months after its formation, now the Congress and Maoist Center are planning to form a new government with the support of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP).

Province Chief Parshuram Khapung on Sunday issued a deadline to the parties to lay claims for the formation of a new government by coming Thursday (5 pm).

The UML-led government in Koshi collapsed after Hikmat Kumar Karki, who became the chief minister on January 8, 2023, did not receive a vote of confidence.

In the 93-member Koshi Province Assembly, 47 province assembly members are required for a majority. The government led by UML Standing Committee member Hikmat Karki fell down with the support of only 46 MPs.

The UML, the largest party in the province assembly, has 40 MPs. Earlier, RPP, which joined the government, has six MPs.

There are 29 MPs from the Congress, 13 from the Maoist Center (including the speaker), four from the CPN (Unified Socialist) and one from the Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP).
