CPN (UML) leader Hikmat Karki is resuming his duties as the Chief Minister of Koshi Province starting Friday.
With the annulment of Uddhav Thapa’s appointment as the Chief Minister today, the position of the Chief Minister of Koshi Province is laying vacant.
Thapa has been relieved of his post after 21 days after he was appointed as the Chief Minister.
He was relieved from his post after a full bench of Justices Ishwar Prasad Khatiwada, Ananda Mohan Bhattarai and Til Prasad Shrestha invalidated the signature of Baburam Gautam, the speaker of Koshi Province Assembly, in the formation of the Koshi government.
With the cancellation of the appointment of Thapa, who became the Chief Minister on July 6, the Supreme Court issued an order to form a new government within seven days in accordance with Article 168 (2) of the Constitution.
According to this constitutional provision, two or more parties will once again try to form a new government with majority.
On July 7, UML had filed a writ petition at the apex court seeking expulsion of Thapa as the Chief Minister, arguing that his appointment was against the provision of the Constitution.
