Seventeen-year-old Nima Rinji Sherpa has set a new world record by scaling Mount K-2 as the youngest climber to summit K-2.

Sherpa, who originally hails from Sankhuwasabha, reached atop the K-2, which is also known as Mt Killer, at 10: 45 am on Thursday.

K-2, the second highest mountain in the world is 8,611 meters high, is located in Pakistan.

Sherpa was 17 years and 99 days when he scaled the mountain.

Alongside Nima Rinji, there was also Tenjen Sherpa and Pasang Norbu Sherpa also scaled the mountain.

Norwegian climber Kristin Harila and Nepali guide Tenjen Lama Sherpa also succeeded in climbing the second highest mountain.

With the scaling of Mt K-2, Kristina Harila and Tenjen Sherpa have set a new world record by scaling 14 eight-thousanders in the shortest period (92 days).

Earlier, this record was held by Nirmal Purja, a Nepal-born naturalised British mountaineer, who had completed the ascent of 14 eight-thousanders in October 29, 2019. He completed the ascent in seven months (six months and six days).

The first person to climb the 14 eight-thousanders was Italian climber Reinhold Messner who took 16 years between 1970 and 1986 and completed the feat without the use of supplementary oxygen. By 2013, the feat had been achieved in 7 years and 310 days by South Korean climber Kim Chang, who also did not use supplementary oxygen.

Nima has already summited eight mountain peaks above 8,000 meters. They include Manaslu, Sagarmatha, Nanga Parbat, Gasherbrum 2, Gasherbrum 1 and Broad Peak.

Nima has planned to scale all the 14 eight-thousanders in his teens. Now, his next project is to summit Mt Cho Oyu.
