A meeting of the Constitutional Council (CC) called by Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda', who chairs the Council, has ended without tangible outcome.
The meeting held at the Office of the Prime Minister in Singha Durbar to recommend the name of Chief Justice has ended inconclusively, said Chairman of National Assembly Ganesh Prasad Timalsina.
“The CC meeting convened to recommend the name of Chief Justice today ended inconclusively after UML Chair KP Oli raised the appointment issue of parliamenatary committee chairman. The next meeting will be held at 5 pm on August 3,” said Timalsina.
Incumbent Chief Justice Hari Krishna Karki is retiring on August 5.
The upcoming meeting will dwell on the appointment of new Chief Justice and other constitutional appointments, according to Timalsina.
A provision has it that a recommendation for the post of Chief Justice has to be made one month before the tenure of the incumbent Chief Justice expires.
The CC meeting is making preparations to recommend Justice Bishwambhar Prasad Shrestha for the post of Chief Justice.
If the new Chief Justice is not appointed by August 5, Shrestha will take charge as the Acting Chief Justice on the ground of seniority.
The constitution has envisioned six-members in the prime minister-led Council. As per the constitutional provisions, chief justice, House Speaker, leader of the opposition, National Assembly chair and deputy Speaker are the members of the Council.
