European Union (EU) Ambassador to Nepal Nona Deprez called on Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Dinesh Kumar Thapaliya on Thursday.

During the meeting, the two sides dwelt on the upcoming federal parliament and provincial assembly elections and matters pertaining to bilateral cooperation between the two countries, according to the Election Commission.

Ambassador Deprez told CEC Thapaliya that EU will observe the elections and wishes to see people’s mandate utilized in a free, fair and transparent manner. On his part, CEC Thapaliya thanked the EU for its continuous support to the election body.

EU has been monitoring Nepal's elections for the past few years. However, Brussels-based EU headquarters is not deploying its election observation mission to Nepal this time after the EC turned down its offer of a team of experts to send observers.

According to EC officials, a team of observers from the EU Delegation to Nepal will be observing the November 20 elections along with its member state embassies.
