Nepali Congress Member of Parliament (MP) Sunil Sharma has been arrested.
MP Sharma, who is elected from Morang constituency-3, was arrested by a team of Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police from Golfutar.
Nepali Congress central member Ajay Babu Siwakoti has informed Nepalkhabar that MP Sharma has been arrested by the CIB team on Thursday afternoon.
A high-level source of Nepal Police has also confirmed that Sharma has been arrested. "He has been arrested", the police source said, "We are carrying out investigation on him, we cannot say more now."
However, the CIB has not officially confirmed the arrest of MP Sharma. The police have not revealed anything about the reason for his arrest.
MP Sharma had been criticizing Finance Minister Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat and Home Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha over the 100 kg gold seized on July 19.
He was publicly speaking that Finance Minister and Home Affairs Minister should resign due to their involvement in the gold case.
Lawmaker Sharma is considered close to Congress leader Dr Sherkhar Koirala.
On July 26, he had warned that he would stage a fast-unto-death if the kingpin behind the gold smuggling were not arrested and brought to justice.
“If the Finance Minister and Home Minister keep arresting only the innocent people (porters from the rural areas), letting the main accused go scot-free, in the gold smuggling case, I, will stage a fast-unto-death in the parliament,” MP Sharma had said.
Both Finance Minister and Home Minister had been annoyed by the statement of Sharma.
