The Millennium Challenge Compact (MCC), a US aid project, is coming into effect from today.
According to the agreement, the MCC is going to be implemented from today (August 30). It is mentioned in the agreement that this project will be completed within five years starting today.
Through the MCC, the United States has given 500 million US dollars in grant assistance to Nepal. Nepal has added 130 million dollars to it.
With this support, 400 KV power transmission lines and substations will be built from Lapsiphedi in Kathmandu to Ratmate in Nuwakot, Damauli in Tanahun to Butwal.
It also includes road upgradation work from Dhankhola in Kapilvastu to Shivakhola in Dang and Banke.
After the dispute about this project, the House of Representatives approved the MCC with a 12-point explanatory declaration on February 27, 2022. The United States has accepted Nepal's explanatory declaration.
According to the agreement, although the MCC implementation date has started today, it is not yet clear how the work of this project will proceed.
Meanwhile, on the first day of the implementation of the MCC, five left-wing parties are staging demonstrations across the country against the MCC.
Five fringe communist parties including Nepal Communist Party, Scientific Socialist Communist Party, Rastriya Janamorcha are protesting today.
Those parties have been demanding that the MCC be canceled.
Four parties are holding a joint protest at Maitighar Mandala at 3 pm. Likewise, Rastriya Janamorcha is holding a protest program at Shanti Batika in Kathmandu at 3 pm today.
The day before the implementation of MCC in Nepal, MCC Vice President Cameron S. Alford arrived in Nepal for a three-day visit.
