MP Madhav Sapkota along with the general public crossing the Tatopani border towards China on foot on Friday morning.

Tatopani checkpoint in Sindhupalchowk has been opened for public from today (Friday), almost after eight years.

Tatopani on the northern border with China has been opened  for the general public since this morning.

The Tatopani border point was opened on Friday morning after 30 locals, including Madhav Sapkota, a member of the House of Representatives elected from Sindhupalchowk-1, entered the Chinese territory from the border area of Bhotekoshi Rural Municipality-2.

As soon as the border was opened, the local residents who obtained the pass of the Nepali Immigration Office from the Miteri Bridge in Liping left for China after being checked by the Chinese security personnel. During the time, MP Sapkota also left for China by crossing the Miteri Bridge.

The Chinese gave a warm welcome to the team including MP Sapkota.

"It is a pleasure to be a witness of this historic moment," said Sapkota, "the border has been fully operational from today."

Last Tuesday, a meeting between Chinese and Nepali officials in Lhasa, Tibet, decided to open the border crossing so that the local common people can travel through it.

Chief District Officer Ramesh Neupane informed that as per the decision, Tatopani border point has been opened for general public from today.

The Tatopani border remained closed since the 2015 mega earthquake. The checkpoint which was briefly reopened after the earthquake had remained shut again due to coronavirus pandemic that broke out in 2019.

With the resumption of the border point, the residents of Sindhupalchowk will now get a pass valid for one year for movement.
