Nepali Congress lawmaker Gagan Thapa has said that amnesty has been granted to the guilty of the heinous crimes by taking advantage of legal loopholes against the spirit of the Constitution.
Speaking at the meeting of the House of Representatives (HoR) on Thursday, lawmaker Thapa said the decision to grant general amnesty to such criminals is erroneous.
Thapa, who is also the general secretary, has said that this decision has made a mockery of the law.
“On the Constitution Day, a prison term of 670 days was waived. The amnesty has been granted to the people found guilty in heinous crimes against the Constitution,” said Thapa, “This decision was taken with ill-intension. We object to it. It has made a mockery of the law.”
He further said that he will strongly object to this decision arguing that it provided undue benefits to the criminals by taking advantage of the legal loopholes.
“We speak out against such anomalies. At times, the state metes out atrocities to the people. Sometimes, the state gives undue benefits to the people by misusing the law. We have spoken out against such illegal activities irrespective of who are in the government,” said Thapa.
He further said that the murderer of the six individuals was granted amnesty. “The court spoke out and urged to formulate laws. We formulated laws following the promulgation of the Constitution,” Thapa said, “The number of murder-accused grew to 6,746 until September 20 (Asoj 3), 2015, against the expectation.”
