General Secretary of the ruling Nepali Congress Gagan Thapa has said that he will contest elections for the post of party's parliamentary party leader after general elections.
Talking to media after casting votes at a polling station in Kathmandu, Thapa said that he will begin homework for the same after he is elected as member of federal parliament.
"I have already staked claim for the post of party's parliamentary party leader. I will start homework for the same once I am elected as parliment member," he said. Thapa said that he is ready to take the helm (premiership) of the country.
"I want to take the helm of the country. To achieve that goal, I must win the general elections first," he said.
Thapa looked upbeat about his victory in the general elections. He is contesting elections from Kathmandu-4.
According to the statute of the Nepali Congress, a party leader must win the party's parliamentary elections first if he/she wants to stake the claim for the post of country's prime minister.
Thapa's claim comes at a time when incumbent Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba is seeking to return to power by winning elections.
