United Nations Secretary General Guterres in Kathmandu

United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has arrived on a four-day official visit to Nepal.

Foreign Minister Narayan Prakash Saud welcomed Secretary General Guterres in the VVIP lounge of the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu at 1 am.

High-ranking officials of the Government of Nepal, representatives of the United Nations Office in Nepal among others were present on the occasion. A squad of the Nepali Army offered a guard of honor to Secretary General Guterres.

Prime Minister Prachanda had invited Secretary General Guterres to visit Nepal while participating in the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly held in New York last September.

UN Secretary General Guterres is also the former Prime Minister of Portugal. This is his first official visit to Nepal since he assumed the office in January 2017.

Programs during Guterres' Nepal visit? 
Guterres will hold separate meetings with President Ramchandra Paudel and Prime Minister Dahal on Sunday afternoon. The Secretary-General will have separate meetings with Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba and CPN (UML) Chairperson KP Sharma Oli at the New Baneshwor-based Federal Parliament Building.

Likewise, Guterres is also scheduled to hold separate meetings with Deputy Prime Minster duo, Purna Bahadur Khadka and Narayankaji Shrestha. 

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Secretary General Guterres will visit Patan Durbar Square, a heritage site of historical and archeological importance in Lalitpur today and attend a dinner hosted by Prime Minister Prachanda in the evening.

On Monday (October 30), Secretary General Guterres will visit Syangboche, Solukhumbu to take stock of the impact of climate change. After returning to Kathmandu from Solukhumbu, Guterres will participate in the program at the UN House in Lalitpur and go to Pokhara and stay for the night in the evening.

On Tuesday morning (October 31), he will go to see the Annapurna circuit from Pokhara. After returning from the Annapurna Circuit, he will attend a press meet at the old airport in Pokhara. Later in the afternoon, he will go to Lumbini, the birthplace of Gautama Buddha. He is scheduled to return to Kathmandu from Lumbini on Tuesday itself and address the joint session of the Federal Parliament at 4 pm.

Secretary General Guterres will return to the UN headquarters in New York on Wednesday.
