President Ramchandra Paudel has asked the United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres to be serious about the negative consequences that Nepal has to face even though it is not the factor of climate change.

He has also asked the United Nations to take initiatives to fulfill the obligations of the developed countries that have become the factors of climate change to reduce the climate change.

President's press advisor Kiran Pokharel informed that Paudel made this request during a courtesy meeting with the United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres, who is on an official visit to Nepal, at Sheetal Niwas on Sunday.

'We are not the cause of climate change but we have been hit because others have emitted more carbon. The United Nations should deter those who destroy the environment to fulfill their responsibilities,” Pokharel quoted the President as saying, “Now the whole world and the mankind have to bear. The United Nations should take the lead in this regard.”

President Paudel said that Nepal has moved forward in completing the rest of the peace process according to the peace accord and the principles of reconciliation, while taking into account the court order and the interests of the United Nations so as not to allow impunity.

He further said that the role of the United Nations has increased in the current world political situation and reminded that Nepal is the second largest contributor to the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission.

In response, Secretary General Guterres mentioned that even though Nepal has no weakness in carbon emissions, Nepal is suffering the most from it, and said that his visit to Nepal is a priority to send a message to the world about climate change with reference to the COP.

Stating that his visit to Nepal is focused on three agendas, he said that he came here because Nepal is a suitable place to send a message to the world about the successful peace process, the impact of climate change and the reduction of inequality which is a factor of world instability.

Recalling that President Paudel had drafted the peace agreement, he expressed his belief that the remaining work would be completed during his tenure.

The meeting was attended by Foreign Minister NP Saud, advisers of the President's Office, and high-ranking officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
