Nepal must enjoy fund allocated for climate adaptation: UN Secretary General

United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has said that Nepal should be allowed to use the funds allocated for climate adaptation.

He stated this during an interaction with mediapersons in Pokhara after his visit to Annapurna Base Camp on Tuesday.

Secretary-General Guterres emphasized that the funds made for climate adaptation should be received by countries including Nepal, which have suffered due to climate change.

Meanwhile, Secretary General Guterres also urged other countries to support Nepal, which has become a victim due to climate change.

Guterres emphasized on reducing the impact of climate change to protect mountains and glaciers around the globe.

He said that due to climate change, landslides have occurred in many places and effective measures should be taken at the global level for the affected communities.

“We must protect these wonderful mountains and glaciers. It is necessary to support Nepal and other countries like Nepal, which have become victims due to climate change. I will appeal to the international community about the negative impact on many communities including Nepal,” said Guterres.

 “There are also many funds for protecting vulnerable communities and for climate adaptation. These funds are allocated to minimize damage and benefit the affected people. It should be used,” he added.

 Guterres stresses wider global solidarity to make society resilient to climate change impact
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who is presently on a four-day official visit to Nepal, beginning on Sunday, has called on the international community to express much solidarity to the efforts to make the world resilient to climate change impact.

In his brief talk to media at Pokhara after observing the Annapurna Base Camp today, the UN Secretary General said, "I visit exactly to send a clear message to the world it is essential to stop this war against nature, it is essential to stop this looting and generating climate change."

"It is essential to preserve these wonderful mountains and these wonderful nations," he said.

As he viewed, Nepal-like countries which do not contribute to climate change, but suffer the consequences and there are so many landslides, so many disasters and so many communities have been deeply impacted negatively by the climate change. He underlined the need of international support and funding to such nations suffering the consequences of climate change.
