Prem Bahadur Maharjan, the president of the Jyapu Samaj, won the elections by defeating Krishna Lal Maharjan by a huge margin of votes.
The Jyapu Samaj is the most powerful organization of the Newari community in Lalitpur.
He won the federal parliamentary elections from Lalitpur-2 with a wide margin of votes for the first time in 40 years of his political career representing CPN-UML. Prem Bahadur got with 15,025 votes.
Prem Bahadur, who had tried to make Krishna Lal a lawmaker in the previous elections of 2056 and 2074, got an opportunity to become a candidate himself this time.
"Not only did I play a role in helping Krishna Lal win the election twice, I was also the key player in his victory," Prem Bahadur told Nepalkhabar.
Also, if Krishna Lal had not left UML to join the CPN (Unified Socialist), the chance for Prem Bahadur to contest the elections would be slim.
Coincidentally, after Siddhi Lal Singh joined CPN (Marxist-Leninist) in 2056, Krishna Lal got an opportunity to become a lawmaker.
Now, after Krishna Lal left, Prem Bahadur got a chance to contest the election.
However, Prem Bahadur’s competitor was Sudin Sakya, who carried the stick as a symbol. The third was the Rastriya Swatantra Party. Krishnalal finished fourth.
Lalitpur-2 has a total of 19 wards including 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 16, 17 of Lalitpur Metropolitan Municipality and 10 wards of Mahalakshmi municipality. The voter-turnout stood at 52,000 in the elections held on Sunday.
"After 40 years in the UML, I became a candidate for the elections to the House of Representatives. The work experience gained in the UML and in the Jyapu Samaj is the main basis for my victory," he said.
