Major General Nirmal Kumar Thapa has been recommended for the post of Lieutenant General, informed Brigadier General Krishna Prasad Bhandari, the Spokesperson for the Nepali Army said.

According to Bhandari, a meeting of the promotion recommendation committee on Wednesday evening took a decision to this effect.

The post was lying vacant after Lieutenant General Sitaram Khadka retired on the ground of age.

Currently, Major General Thapa has been working as a Force Commander in the United Nations Supervision Mission in Siriya (UNSMIS).

Meanwhile, the Committee has called for complaints, if any, against Thapa in the next seven days.  There are two posts of Lieutenant Generals in the Nepali Army.

Earlier, Ashok Raj Sigdel had been promoted as Lieutenant General. One among Sigdel and Thapa will picked as the Chief of Army Staff of the Nepali Army from September next year.

Sigdel is likely to be the next Commander-in-Chief since he is senior to Thapa.

Incumbent CoAS Prabhuram Sharma will retire on September 9, 2024.
