Ex-PM Khanal suffers electoral defeat in Ilam-1

Senior leader of the ruling Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Socialist) Jhalanath Khanal has suffered defeat in the elections to the House of Representatives.

Khanal, who is also the former prime minister, has been defeated by Mahesh Basnet, a leader of the main opposition CPN (Unified Marxist Leninist), in Ilam electoral constituency-1.

Elected Basnet has bagged 24304 votes while Khanal received 21802 votes. However, the Election Commission is yet to make public the election results of the constituency.

Earlier on Sunday, Subhash Nembang won elections from Ilam electoral constituency-2.
