The ruling CPN (Maoist Center) has pledged support to the CPN (UML) in the by elections to be held in Ilam constituency 2 on April 27.
A meeting of UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli and Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ decided to field Suhang Nembang as a common candidate in Ilam-2 by elections, informed leader Dhirendra Sharma. Maoist Center Ilam District Working Committee had unanimously recommend Sharma as a candidate in Ilam-2.
“We will support Suhang Nemabang here in the Ilam-2 by-elections in line with the decision reached among the four parties of the ruling coalition in the center,” Sharma told Nepalkhabar, “We are already pulling our sleeves to help Suhang win the election.”
The top ruling coalition leaders have reached an agreement to field a Maoist Center leader in the Bajhang Provincial Assembly (1) by elections for the Maoist Center's support to UML in Ilam-2, Sharma said.
The by-election is being held in Bajhang Provincial Assembly (1) after Nepali Congress lawmaker Prithvi Bahadur Singh died in an accident on June 20, 2023.
Maoist Center received 5,153 proportional representation votes from Ilam-2 in the general elections held on November 20, 2022.
UML has fielded Suhang in Ilam-2 by elections after his father Subas Nembang passed away on September 11, 2023.
According to the District Election Office, UML late leader Nembang had defeated his closest contender Dambar Bahadur Khadka of Nepali Congress by a margin of 114 votes.
Nembang garnered 30,020 votes, while Khadka managed to get 29,906 votes as per the final results.
The Election Commission of Nepal has set April 6 for the parties to file nominations.
