CPN (UML) and CPN (Maoist Center) have staked a claim for a new government in Koshi Province on Monday.
UML and Maoist Center laid a claim with the support of 52 MPs to Province Chief Parshuram Khapung for a new government this afternoon.
UML and Maoist Center formally withdrew their support to Chief Minister Kedar Karki while submitting the claim with signatures.
They also lodged a petition at the Province Assembly Secretariat stating that they have no confidence in incumbent Chief Minister Karki.
“Chief Minister Kedar Karki has lost the confidence of the majority of MPs. We, the majority members of the Koshi Province Assembly, request the Head of the Province to proceed with the necessary process for the appointment of the UML Province Assembly Parliamentary Party leader, Hikmat Karki, as the new Chief Minister of Koshi Province,” the two parties have said.
With the withdrawal of their support, Chief Minister Karki is now in the minority, paving the way for the formation of a majority government.
The two parties have demanded that leader Hikmat Kumar Karki, the leader of the UML Province Assembly Parliamentary Party, be appointed as the new Chief Minister.
On October 14, 2023, Karki became the Chief Minister with the support of 47 MPs, including 39 from UML and eight from Nepali Congress.
Although Karki was not the leader of Nepali Congress Parliamentary Party, he rebelled against the party and succeeded in assuming the post of the Chief Minister of Koshi Province on October 14. He secured the vote of confidence on October 28.
In the 93-member Koshi Province Assembly, UML has 40 MPs, NC (29), Maoist Center (13), RPP (6), Unified Socialist (4) and JSP has 1 MP.
