Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) Managing Director Kulman Ghising has said that only the private sector can meet the target of generating 28,000 megawatts of electricity in the next 10 years.
Speaking at the pre-budget discussion held in Kathmandu on Thursday, MD Ghising said the private sector in Nepal has an important role in the hydropower productions and suggested to encourage private sector to achieve the target of generating 28,000 megawatts of electricity in the next 10 years.
The NEA is positive about both opening new Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) and expediting the completion of projects with already established PPAs, according to Ghising.
“We have set a target of generating 28,000 megawatts of electricity in the next 10 years,” said MD Ghising, “The private sector can meet this target. The NEA is always ready to assist the private sector.”
He shared that the NEA has already signed the PPAs up to 10,000 megawatts of electricity, of which the construction of projects up to 3,500 megawatts has already entered the construction phase.
The power production in Nepal gained momentum due to the promotion of the electric vehicles, said Ghising.
Similarly, the President of Independent Power Producers Association, Nepal (IPPAN), Ganesh Karki, suggested that the Nepal government should announce a 10-year plan for the power production and generate 30,000 megawatts of electricity in the next 10 years.
