General Secretary of Nepali Congress Gagan Kumar Thapa has said that the six percent of economic growth projected by the government in the upcoming fiscal budget is baseless.
Speaking at the meeting of the House of Representatives (HoR) in New Baneshwar on Wednesday, General Secretary Thapa asked Finance Minister Barshaman Pun for the basis of six percent of economic growth.
“Finance Minister Barsha Man Pun has set a target of six percent of economic growth, like the previous fiscal year. Against the projection, the economic growth remained less than 4 percent. What is the basis of six percent of economic growth while our development partners – be it IMF or Asian Development Bank – have been reiterating that it will remain at 4 percent?” said Thapa.
MP Thapa categorically sought the basis on which Minister Pun projected the economic growth at 6 percent. “Finance Minister Pun should answer this question,” said MP Thapa, hinting out at the change of government in the near future, given the volatile political situation.
General Secretary Thapa further said that the target set by the government will be met only with 34% of economic growth corresponding to the budget estimation of Rs 1 trillion 419 billion.
