Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has lost the vote of confidence of the House of Representatives (HoR).
Prachanda failed to secure the vote of confidence on Friday resulting in the downfall of the government led by him after 18 months of formation.
The Prime Minister today asked for a vote of confidence for the fifth time in accordance with Article 100 (2) of the Constitution.
Prime Minister Prachanda received only 63 votes in favor of the vote of confidence, while 194 MPs voted against it. A total of 258 MPs participated during the vote of confidence.
One MP remained neutral, Speaker Devraj Ghimire said.
Nepali Congress and CPN (UML) on July 1 struck a deal on a new power alliance. After the agreement, on July 3, the CPN (UML) withdrew its support to the government and recalled its ministers.
After the UML withdrew its support, the government led by Prime Minister Prachanda fell into minority, obliging him to seek the vote of confidence within 30 days as per the constitutional provision.
Earlier, Prachanda became the Prime Minister for the first time on December 25, 2022 with the support of CPN (UML). He took the vote of confidence for the first time on January 10, 2023. Out of the 270 MPs present at that time, Prachanda received 268 votes.
Then he took the vote of confidence on March 20, 2023 for the 2nd time. A total of 172 MPs voted in favor of confidence during that time.
Then he took the vote of confidence on March 13, 2024, for the third time. A total of 157 MPs voted in favor of confidence during that time.
Similarly, Prime Minister Prachanda took the vote of confidence for the fourth time on March 20, 2024.
He received 157 votes out of 158 MPs who participated in the process of the vote of confidence at that time.
