South Asian Karate: Nepal reigns supreme with 31 gold medals, India trails second

Nepal clinched the first position with 31 gold medals in the 8th South Asian Karate Championship held in Thimphu, Bhutan.

Nepal has won a total of 62 medals including 31 gold, 20 silver and 11 bronze medals in the competition that concluded on Friday.

Finishing second in the overall medal count, India secured an impressive haul of 27 gold, 20 silver, and 13 bronze medals.

Sri Lanka finished third with 5 gold, 18 silver, and 31 bronze medals, while host Bhutan settled for 5 silver and 37 bronze medals.

On the last day of the competition, Saman Shrestha won the gold medal in the men's cadet category under 52 kg, Sahil Rai in the 63 kg category, and Nishan Tamang in the 68 kg category (junior category).

Likewise, Gaurav Nepal in 84 kg under 21 years, Ashish Shrestha in 84 kg plus, Alon Shrestha in 55 kg for senior men, Santosh Shrestha in 67 kg, Mohammad Sekhu Alam in 84 kg and Biplav Lal Shrestha in 84 kg plus brought gold to Nepal.

Gaurav Nepal triumphed in the 84kg U-21 category, while Ashish Shrestha dominated the 84kg plus category. In the senior men's competition, Alon Shrestha emerged victorious in the 55kg weight class. Santosh Shrestha (67kg), Mohammad Sekhu Alam (84kg), and Biplav Lal Shrestha (84kg plus) all added to Nepal's gold medal tally with impressive performances.

Barsha Rai in 42 kg, Prosiya Chaudhary in 47 kg, Manisha Kumari Bohara in 61 kg, Sushmita Waiba in junior 42 kg, Samiksha Dhungana in 53 kg, Priyanka Shahi in U-21 45 kg, Anjali Maharjan in 55 kg and Jiya Karki in 55 kg won gold in the cadet women's category.

Similarly, Barsha Budha Magar in 45 kg, Ningpa Tamang in 61 kg, and Erica Gurung, the 19th Asiad silver medalist in 68 kg, won the gold medals for Nepal.

While Nepal won the first position in women team kumite, the men team finished second.
