A Bombardier CRJ-200 aircraft operated by Saurya Airlines crashed in Nepal on Wednesday morning, killing 18 out of 19 people on board.
Aviation Safety Network records indicate this is the first fatal crash of a Bombardier CRJ-200 in Nepal, despite minor incidents involving the aircraft type reported in 2018 and 2019.
In 2003, Canadian company Bombardier manufactured the CRJ-200 aircraft, which is equipped with two jet engines.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal on April 26, 2024 had permitted Saurya Airlines aircraft to conduct flight services for a year. The aircraft had accumulated 28,785 flight hours and 57 minutes prior to receiving the final clearance.
Currently, Saurya Airlines and Shree Airlines have been operating flight services on Bombardier aircraft in Nepal.
This aircraft had struck against a bird while it was flying to Biratnagar from Kathmandu on September 17, 2018. It was carrying 52 passengers during that period. All the passengers were safe.
Similarly, a Shree Airlines Bombardier aircraft struck the wing of a Yeti Airlines aircraft while being parked on November 8, 2019. Fortunately, no human casualties were reported during that period.
However, 18 out of 19 people were killed after the Bombardier aircraft of Saurya Airlines crashed at Tribhuvan International Airport this morning (July 24, 2024).
The Bombardier CRJ-200 aircraft with the call sign 9N-AME was flying to Pokhara for a regular technical test. The ill-fated aircraft crashed on the east side of the runway shortly after it took off, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN).
Canadian aircraft manufacturer Bombardier successfully conducted the first flight of its CRJ-200 plane in 1995.
As many as 79 aircraft of CRJ-200 series have crashed across the world so far.
A total of 79 CRJ-200 series aircraft have been involved in accidents worldwide to date.
