The Nepal government on Thursday legally resumed the operation of the social media platform TikTok after banning it for almost 10 months.

A cabinet meeting held at the Office of the Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers in Singha Durbar on Thursday, took a decision to this effect, a minister privy to the meeting told Nepalkhabar.

“The cabinet meeting legally removed the TikTok ban effective from today,” said the minister.

Minister for Communication and Information Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung submitted a proposal in the cabinet meeting. It was endorsed by the meeting.

Minister Gurung called a minister level meeting on Wednesday and decided to remove the TikTok ban.

With the cabinet decision to lift the TikTok ban, the social media platform app is set to come into operation across Nepal.

The then Prachanda government on November 13, 2023, banned TokTok stating that its objectionable short videos and live streaming eroded social harmony.
