Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City Balendra Shah (Balen) has said Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and ruling CPN (UML) exhibited their dual personalities on the management of coastal areas of the rivers in the Kathmandu Valley.

Posting a status on social media, Mayor Shah vented his ire stating that Prime Minister Oli and UML leaders started protesting after he tried to implement the verdict on the management of river banks issued by the Supreme Court three years before he became the mayor.

“Three years before I won the elections as the mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, a joint bench of Justices Dr Ananda Mohan Bhattarai and Sapana Pradhan Malla of Supreme Court on August 5, 2019 had issued the verdict stating that the additional 20 meters of land on either sides of the rivers be left in the Valley. UML Chairman KP Oli was the Prime Minister then,” reads Balen’s post.

Balen in his status further said that Agni Kharel was the Attorney General, Dormani Paudel was the Chief Minister of Bagmati Pradesh and Bidya Sundar Shakya was the Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City then. All of them had been appointed by then Prime Minister Oli.  The apex court had issued the verdict after their secretaries and their staffers presented arguments before the Supreme Court, said Balen.

Mayor Balen has termed it as an opportunist characteristics questioning why they did not move the court if they were dissatisfied.

“I would like to urge one and all to comply with these standards while carrying out construction works, securing official authorization for construction plans, procuring and selling houses, and mortgaging house and land to secure a loan,” reads the Balen’s post.
