Ruling Nepali Congress has suggested that Deputy Speaker Indira Rana should step down stating that the allegation leveled against her is serious in nature.

An office-bearers’ meeting held at the residence of party President Sher Bahadur Deuba in Budhanilkhantha took a decision to this effect, said party chief whip Shyam Ghimire.

“NC’s official stance is that the allegation leveled against Rana is serious in nature. She should pave the way by tendering her resignation from her post,” said Ghimire, the Deputy Speaker is not allowed to make such a recommendation. Her conduct disgraced the dignity of the parliament.”

A letter from Deputy Speaker Rana, written on an official letterhead, seeking an appointment for interview with the US Embassy, had been made public.

Ruling parties sought Rana’s resignation since Tuesday morning stating that the latter’s conduct is against the national interest, and the dignity of the deputy speaker’s post.

Lawmakers of NC and UML demanded the resignation of Rana in the meeting of the House of Representatives on Tuesday.

On the other hand, CPN (Maoist Center), Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Rastriya Prajatantra Party protested in favor of Rana.
