The BJP is set to form the government after 27 years and remove the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) from power in the capital. The AAP has bagged 22 seats, massively down from its tally of 62 in the 2020 Delhi poll, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won 48.
In a historic victory, the BJP has come to power in the national capital after 27 years, securing 48 out of 70 seats in the Delhi assembly elections, according to the Election Commission of India. The incumbent AAP managed to secure 22 seats but fell short of the majority.
BJP leader Parvesh Verma defeated AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal in a highly contested battle. Chief Minister Atishi, however, managed to win the Kalkaji seat against BJP's Ramesh Bidhuri. She resigned from her position as chief minister earlier today.
Meanwhile, the BJP supporters have been celebrating the result in the city, with prime minister Narendra Modi giving an address at the BJP headquarters to congratulate party workers.
The EC of India began counting of votes at 8 am on February 8 with postal ballots. The approximate voter turnout after the Delhi assembly election stood at 60.54 per cent, according to the EC.
The incumbent AAP, BJP and the Congress were the main contenders of Delhi poll 2025. AAP was eyeing a third straight full term in Delhi. AAP, which has dominated the last two assembly polls in Delhi, won 62 out of 70 seats in the 2020 election, while the BJP won eight.
Congress, which ruled Delhi for 15 years, failed to open its account in the last two assembly polls and has performed similarly this time as well, scoring zero. (with inputs from Hindustan Times)
