The body of Prakriti Lamsal, a Nepali student who died under suspicious circumstances at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Odisha, India, has been brought to her hometown in Bhairahawa, Nepal.
Her body was brought via the Sunauli border point on Wednesday evening and was taken to Universal Medical College in Bhairahawa, according to Rupandehi Police DSP Suraj Karki.
Sunil Lamsal, the father of Prakriti, had traveled to India after receiving the news of her daughter's passing. Sunil and the body of her daughter were airlifted up to Gorakhpur on separate flights. Hence, Sunil is still on his way back home in Bhairahawa.
DSP Karki stated that the decision on when to hand over the body to the family would be made after discussions with the father.
Prakriti Lamsal, 20, was found dead in her hostel room on Sunday morning. Following her death, students started staging demonstrations demanding justice for Prakriti. However, the university administration intervened in the protests, leading to clashes and the subsequent expulsion of Nepali students.
As of Wednesday evening, 168 Nepali students returned home, citing fear and distress following their friend's death and the university's actions.
Despite the university administration's apology and calls for students to return, most have not done so. The incident has raised concerns about the safety and treatment of Nepali students studying in India.
