The Province 1 Renaming Joint Struggle Committee and groups opposing a local cable car project have announced a unified protest movement. This decision was taken during a joint virtual meeting held on Thursday night.
The meeting also decided to publicly release photos of the families of Chief District Officer (CDO) Netra Prasad Sharma and Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Rabi Rawal of Taplejung, accusing them of suppressing the protests. Furthermore, the agitating groups plan to lodge complaints against them with the Nepal government and United Nations.
The joint struggle committee also decided to send a public letter to Matrika Bhattarai, the elder brother of CPN (UML) Secretary Yogesh Bhattarai, seeking clarification from Tumyahang Chumlung. Matrika Bhattarai is accused of inciting crimes against humanity.
The meeting extensively discussed and reviewed the "inhuman and barbaric suppression" by the government against the Mukumlung protectors in Phungling, Taplejung, on February 22, 2025. The incident has been named "Phungling Incident: Government's Crime Against Humanity," highlighting what they describe as unprecedented police brutality in Limbu settlements.
The groups will release details and photos of those arrested and injured during the incident. They have also announced plans to organize public demonstrations and protest rallies in all 14 districts of Province 1 and Madhesh Province on March 1, to raise awareness about the "Phungling Incident."
Additionally, a large-scale public demonstration and protest rally will be held in Kathmandu on March 5, to draw the attention of the government and the general public, according to a press note released by the Joint Struggle Committee.
