The Prime Minister of Nepal, KP Sharma Oli, and the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi held a cordial bilateral meeting in Bangkok, the capital city of Thailand on Friday.
The 45-minute-long one-on-one meeting held at Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Bangkok following the conclusion of the Sixth BIMSTEC Summit is expected to thaw the "strained relations" between the two Prime Ministers. Prime Minister Oli's Chief Advisor, Bishnu Rimal, has confirmed that the meeting between the two Prime Ministers was one-on-one.
Talking to Nepalkhabar, following the meeting between the two Prime Ministers, former Nepali Ambassador to India Nilambar Acharya viewed the Oli-Modi meeting has paved the way for improved bilateral relations between Nepal and India.
"The meeting of the two Prime Ministers appears to have been cordial. It has paved the new way for the two countries to advance their bilateral relations in the upcoming days," said Acharya. There have been signs of "strained relations" the two Prime Ministers. The meeting has helped thaw bilateral relations between the two countries."
This meeting is viewed to have been more cordial and productive compared to the one held in New York in September last year, according to Acharya.
Similarly, Prime Minister Modi commented that his meeting with Prime Minister was productive.
Taking to social media platform X following the bilateral meeting, Modi said, "I had a productive meeting with Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on the sidelines of the Sixth BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok. India attaches immense priority to relations with Nepal."
The two leaders reviewed the unique and close relationship between India and Nepal and expressed satisfaction at the progress made in physical and digital connectivity, people-to-people linkages, and in the domain of energy, according to a press note issued by the Ministry of External Affairs of India.
Likewise, Prime Minister Oli said he had a warm and cordial meeting with his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi in Bangkok today.
"Our discussions were highly meaningful and constructive. I express my appreciation over this cordial exchange," PM Oli wrote on his X (formerly known as twitter) account after the meeting.
Different aspects of Nepal-India relation were discussed during the meeting. "This dialogue will be vital for making new partnership to advance bilateral ties and regional cooperation as well as the agendas raised by the BIMSTEC Summit," said PM Oli.
