The Health Insurance Board has decided to make health insurance mandatory for foreign citizens coming to Nepal to reduce financial risks.
During a press conference held at the Board's office on Sunday, Dr. Raghu Raj Kafle, the Executive Director of the Board, stated that all public representatives, employees, migrant workers, general citizens, and even foreign nationals arriving in Nepal will be required to enroll in health insurance.
"All levels of public representatives, employees working in various bodies of the Nepal government, individuals working in organizational institutions, migrant workers and their families, general citizens, and even foreign nationals coming to Nepal will be mandatorily enrolled in health insurance. This will help achieve the government's slogan of Universal Health Coverage in its entirety," he said.
Director Kafle expressed confidence that this measure would prove to be a milestone in reducing the financial risks of the Health Insurance Board. "We believe this will serve as a cornerstone in minimizing the financial risks of the Health Insurance Board," Kafle said.
He also mentioned that scattered programs will be integrated and brought under the Health Insurance Board. "Provincial governments and local levels have also been providing assistance and subsidies to citizens for easy access to treatment," he said. "These fragmented programs will be consolidated and brought under the Health Insurance Board."
He added that discussions have already progressed between the Board and the Ministry of Health and Population to integrate health subsidy services at all levels.
